THE SHOW

Following the defunct Star Trek:Phase II project, and the move into movies not giving Trek fans enough, a new 80's series was being planned... a new generation of Starfleet Personnel for audiences to get used to.  Eight characters - set on the USS Enterprise-D -  were drafted up, including a French commanding officer (originally named Julian Picard).  It's reported that Gene Roddenberry wasn't keen on the Patrick Stewart for the lead role, but he was talked into the casting by his colleagues.  He was also talked into creating a 'good' Klingon character. Roddenberry didn't want to, but his colleagues said that it would show that the universe had progressed in the set time of 100 years between Kirk and the presents crew... so Roddenberry created Lt.Worf (Michael Dorn), and said that the character would appear in only 8 episodes, and the role was shared out with the existing security officer, Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby).  Fans warmed to the character immediately  and the character stayed.  This caused problems elsewhere though, and Crosby decided to quit, feeling that her character wasn't being used enough.

The series was accepted by Trek fans, and easily surpassed it's predecessor, lasting seven years.  It's believed that the series could have easily lasted longer.  The show marked it's transition from third season to fourth (the original series was axed after it's third) with the show's first two-part season cliff-hanger, a stunning Borg story called 'The Best of Both Worlds) which saw the ship's captain assimilated as part of the alien species collective as Locutus of Borg.

OTHER CAST

  Q
(John De Lancie)

Omnipotent Being

An omnipotent being, with a grudge/love for humanity.  In the very first mission, Picard, Data, Troi, & Yar were put on Trial, representing humanity, and it's mistakes in it's history.  Since that moment, Q found an intrigue in Picard, in some cases (amongst all the trouble) helping him.  Q is responsible for The Borg coming to the Alpha Quadrant.
  Lt. Reginald Barclay
(Dwight Schultz)

Engineering Officer

An engineer, Reg is nothing you'd expect from a starfleet officer.  Shy and withdrawn, Reg has frequent sessions with Counsellor - not only because he harbours feeling for her.  Over the years on the Enterprise, Barclay has been found to have broken the taboo of creating holodeck scenarios featuring crewmembers.  Barclay is also a hypochondriac, and his fears come to life when the crew de-evolve due to one of his illnesses.
  Guinan
(Whoopi Goldberg)

Ten Forward Bartender

An El Aurien, Guinan's people were savagely attacked by the Borg, before humans knew about them.  Guinan's age is unknown, but once lived on Earth at the time of Clements.  As bartender in Ten forward, she often lends a sympathetic ear to Captain Picard.
  Ambassador
Lwaxana Troi
(Majel Barrett)

 Betazed Ambassador

A Betazoid Ambassador, Lwaxana often visits (with her servant Mr.Homm) Deanna, her daughter, and her love of 'men' clearly makes Picard a little uneasy around her.
