How did Tobias join Purple Dreams? In 1997 Tobias was asked by John Blackmur to write a play for him, calling themselves JEST-ERICO. When John Blackmur left to start his career as a comedian (ahem!) Tobias took over entirely. By February 1999 he renamed the group to Purple Dreams. As the founding member of the group, Tobias casts, writes and directs each and every production, and usually takes the lead character. Through the course of time, Tobias has since joined other companies - such as The Princess Theatre Club and The Norfolk 'N' Good Adult Drama group, but his heart remains with his own group, which so far has seven productions under it's belt. Along the way Tobias has picked a Best Youth Actor award, and was a runner-up for Best Actor, just pipped at the post by an actor he would end up working with.
Exit Sidney - Tobias wrote and directed (as we will every Purple Dreams production) the first entry into the Hunstanton Festival Of Arts. Also taking the lead character - Tristen Matthews - he was awarded the 'Best Youth Actor' in 1999. This play remains the one Tobias compares all of his plays too.
Boys & Girls - A prequel to 'Exit Sidney', Tobias used much the same cast, but for a change in actress. While 'Exit Sidney' was 30mins, 'Boys & Girls' (Tobias' third entry into the Search For A Star competition) was only 10mins, but proved to be one of the more enjoyable productions to be involved in.
Tristen's Trauma - Having performed two plays in what is now known as 'The Sidney Saga', it felt natural to carry on the characters, now featuring some new cast members, in a sequel, and for the moment, last chapter of the 'Saga'. Technically the best of the three productions, Tobias felt that it didn't run as smoothly, due to too many cast members for such a short play, and a change of venue.
Darius - Deciding to break away from 'The Sidney Saga', Tobias decided to extend the idea of a play he wrote for 'Jest-Erico'. Playing the title role, 'Darius' he presented comedy interlinked with morality and ethics examining death and some of the beliefs we hold.
Tempus Fudged-It - After four very successful productions, Tobias remains unhappy with his fourth entry into Search For A Star. Playing the character of Bob, he invented the universe, time and everything that goes with it. God, under the goading of Lucifer steals the idea. Again, too many actors were used (each one needed, but for 10mins, it was too much) and the time frame they had to rehearse the play was too little.
Axis - Again, the rehearsal time was too short, and with many cast problems going on, 'Axis' remains the most stressful of the productions... and also the most different. Placing one of his other cast members as the lead for a change (Tom Clutterbuck also helped develop the idea), the story was quite a dramatic one, and played out on scenes, rather than one long act. Although Tobias did 'chicken out' and fall back slightly on his 'American sitcom' style for a couple of scenes, and a lot of the audience didn't quite understand the plot, it was all quite well received, and something he is (kind of) proud of.
Faut de Mieux: Two Men & A Gilbert - Following on from 'Axis' was always going to be difficult and with actors dropping out, and with he shortest rehearsal time (two weeks), 'Two Men & A Gilbert' was always going to fail. Clearly the worst production under the name 'Purple Dreams', it's the only one Tobias is embarrassed about, and it's a shame it remains the last production for the company - for now anyway. It was too 'silly' for the wrong audience, at the wrong venue.
Tobias' Future in Purple Dreams - What or when the next play will be is unknown at the moment. Tobias has many ideas for more plays and now just needs the cast an opportunities to form them. As Tobias works at the Theatre he usually performs in, he is unable to perform in the talent contests, and the adjudicated drama section of the Festival Of Arts is now seemingly non-existent. Tobias now hopes to produce his own 'full production', having built up a small fan base, and is now a name around the local groups. Look out for the next production, hopefully in 2006.
