THE
ORIGINAL SERIES - THE
NEXT GENERATION - VOYAGER
ENTERPRISE
- THE MOVIES
the show - regular cast - other cast - episodes

With the success of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Rick Berman and Michael Pillar (following the death of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry) set up a new Star Trek series... and this one would be different... and it certainly was. This series would be set on a Space Station instead of a Starship, and rather having a different adventure each week, the crew of Deep Space Nine would be have to face up to their mistakes, and except the consequences of their actions. This series would be darker and grittier to the Star Trek that people were used to... but not everyone thought that this was a good move. It was the first time that two Star Trek series had co-existed, and with the popular Next Gen ending, and moving into movies, DS9 took a bit of a hammering... a hammering that continued with the set up of a third Star Trek series - DS9 never had an easy time of it.
The series starred Avery Brooks as the African American commander Benjamin Sisko, arriving on the station as a single father to Jake (Cirroc Lofton). The series, probably to gain support from the TNG fans, had at least one familiar Trek face in Chief Miles O'Brien, the Irish transporter chief from the Enterprise-D. It's just as well, as fans had to deal with probably Trek's oddest regular characters... Odo (Rene Auberjonois) a shapeshifter, Dax (Terry Farrell) a beautiful woman who was formally a man, and Quark (Armin Shimerman) a greedy Ferengi bartender.
One of the hardest-to-swallow elements of the series was it's reliance on politics and religion. Trek has always featured those elements, but an entire show based on the two, was a little overpowering for some. However, the series carried on, and proved itself by lasting seven seasons just like TNG. It also did it's best to win over fans... and by the fourth season it has hit it's stride... symbolised by the introduction of the new powerful enemies 'The Dominion' from the other side of the show's stable Wormhole and the introduction of another familiar face... Lt.Commander Worf (Michael Dorn). By the end of the fifth season the Federation was at war, and DS9 really started to win people over. By the end of the final season, while it's fair to say DS9 was slightly anti-climactic, the series had earned it's placed in Trek history.
